ANALYSIS - Artifact 2: Gap and Cause Analysis

In order to be able to identify the most effective solution to a performance problem, one must first identify the causes of the observed performance gaps. This following example illustrates gap and cause analysis methods.

Context
  • This analysis was conducted September - November 2005 at the Tallahassee-Leon Commmunity Animal Service Center.
  • The project was a requirement for EME6691, Performance Systems Analysis, taught by Dr. A. Darabi.

Conditions
  • Our team had access to TLCASC employees, customers, and organizational documents.
  • The study had to be completed according to the class timetable. Each deliverable had a specific deadline.
  • We had access to a report on a similar study conducted by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and were able to confirm some of their finding as well as report on findings not covered by the HSUS report.
  • While the course requirements specified a generic outline for the analysis, the specific design for our project was an original effort by the team.
Scope
  • This analysis followed the system analysis presented in Artifact 1.
  • Our team completed the gap and cause analysis and presented recommendations in a final report as well as a presentation to the client.
  • TLCASC is currently implementing a selection of our recommendations within the scope of their reorganization.
Role
  • I was the project leader for this project.
  • Within the scope of my responsibilities, I created the project plan, assigned team roles and tasks, scheduled all customer interactions, and was the primary point of contact for the customer.
  • The contents of this artifact was written in collaboration with the team editor.
