DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT - Artifact 4: Application Design

New trends in instructional technology include the increased use of technology based non-instructional solutions. These electronic performance support systems (EPSS) require a combination of instructional systems and information technology skills. The following is an example of an EPSS I designed to provide mark-sense scan form support to university constituents.

Context
  • This application was designed in early 2003 and released in two phases by the technology team of Assessment Services in the Office for Distributed and Distance Learning (now Academic & Professional Program Services) at the Florida State University. The course evaluation module was released in the Fall of 2003 and the module handling all other scan jobs was released in the Fall of 2005.

Conditions
  • The web-based system was designed in order to replace an outdated method for providing course evaluations and exam scanning support.
  • The target deadlines were negotiated between my supervisor, the director of our unit, and the university administration.
Scope
  • The course evaluation application offers online ordering of course evaluation packets and online access to course evaluation reports to the faculty and administrators of the university. The job tracking system allows tracking of all exams and surveys processed by Assessment Services.
  • For more information, please visit: http://assessmentservices.fsu.edu.
Role
  • I was the project manager and designer of the system and supervised two programmers who implemented the design.
