EVALUATION & RESEARCH - Artifact 1: Formative Evaluation

Arguably one of the most distinctive features of a systematic approach to instruction is conducting formative evaluation before the release and mass production of new instructional materials. In spite of the up-front costs involved, this practice has the potential to save significant expenses by preventing post-production changes.

Context
  • The formative evaluation was conducted in December 2003 as part of the class project for EME5603, Introduction to Systematic Instructional Design, taught by Dr. R. Reiser.

Conditions
  • I independently designed, organized, and conducted both the one-to-one and the small group formative evaluation presented in the artifact.
  • The timeline was dictated by the structure of the class.
Scope
  • Since their publication, the materials have been used in their original form by Assessment Services customers and employees.
  • Additionally, I have adapted the materials to teach a yearly workshop on item analysis for the Program for Instructional Excellence at Florida State University.
  • Both the self-instructional module and the workshop are rated positively by users and participants.
Role
  • I personally completed all phases of the project.
